What the hell is a manilla envelope? Sure, I know what it is, but why is it Manila? As a young and naive child I had the misconception that it was called a Vanilla Envelope, aptly named because of its vanilla colored appearance. However M is 8 letters away from V in the alphabet [See memorizing the alphabet], completely changing the adjective's meaning.
Well, its taken me many years to consult an answer box on this issue, but now its done. It's derived from the material used to make it: Manila Hemp. Manila hemp, also known as manilla, is a type of fiber obtained from the leaves of the abacá (Musa textilis), a relative of the banana. The name, 'Manila', refers to the capital of the Philippines, one of the main producers of abacá.

8 letters away? My alphabetical system as well as my numerical system both tell me that 22-13 is 9. Perhaps your system is flawed??
I said vanilla until age 13
Tim, your point is valid and my statement is ambiguous at best. There are 8 letters between them, which is what I intended to state and which would have made things clear for the reader. It really depends on how you view letters as being "away" from each other. Would one say that an adjacent letter is one letter away? One could just as easily start the count at zero and say that M and N are no letters away from each other since they are adjacent. Therefore, O would be one letter away from M.
Perhaps this is justification for my incompetence as a writer but unlikely for my incompetence as an arithmetician.
